North Carolina has recognized two new political parties: the Justice For All Party and the We The People Party. These recognitions have expanded voter choices, allowing voters to affiliate with nine different parties or remain unaffiliated.
The Justice For All Party will feature presidential candidate Cornel West and vice-presidential candidate Melina Abdullah on the ballot in the 2024 general election.
The We The People Party has nominated Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Nicole Shanahan for president and vice president of the United States, respectively. They also have candidates running for local offices such as Jeff Scott for N.C. Senate District 40 and Mark Ortiz for Rowan County Commissioner.
The Justice For All Party gained recognition after a court order, despite initial opposition from the State Board of Elections due to concerns about fraud in the signature gathering process.
Recognizing new political parties allows voters more choices when registering to vote or updating their existing registrations. This also means that voters can switch their affiliation to one of these new parties if they wish.
Voters can register with the new parties by checking the Other box and writing the name of the party (e.g., Justice For All or We The People) on the line in the Political Party Affiliation section of the voter registration form.
In addition to recognizing new political parties, the State Board of Elections approved the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hills Mobile UNC One Card as an acceptable form of photo identification for voting in the 2024 general election. They also unanimously approved Verity 2.7 and version 2.7.1 for use in North Carolina as a modification of the Hart InterCivic voting system.
Roy Burton Osborn, a Democrat, was appointed to the Jackson County Board of Elections by the State Board of Elections.
North Carolinas political landscape is diverse with multiple parties recognized, including the Constitution, Democratic, Green, Libertarian, No Labels, Republican, Justice For All, and We The People parties. This diversity reflects the states varied political views and engagement.
Voters can switch their party affiliation by updating their voter registration information. For more details on how to do this, voters can refer to the Updating Registration section provided by the State Board of Elections.
Having multiple political parties in North Carolina enhances voter choice and representation. It allows diverse voices to be heard and ensures that various perspectives are represented in the political process.
