Joe Musgrove departed the Padres' National League Wild Card Series game against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday with what the team called right elbow tightness.
Musgrove pitched for 3 2/3 innings before exiting the game with a 5-1 lead for the Padres.
The team did not offer an immediate update on Musgrove's injury, but catcher Kyle Higashioka rushed to the mound after Musgrove stretched his arm and shook it.
Musgrove's postseason status is uncertain until the results of his MRI are known. He will undergo an MRI on Thursday to determine the extent of his elbow injury.
Musgrove has been on the injured list twice this season due to elbow issues. The second time, he was diagnosed with a bone spur in his elbow and missed 2 1/2 months.
The Padres held on to win the game 5-4 despite Musgrove's early exit. They eliminated Atlanta in two games.
The injury could be caused by several things, including tendinitis, a UCL tear, ulnerneritis, or simple inflammation of the elbow.
Since returning on Aug. 12, Musgrove has been arguably the Padres' best pitcher, posting a 2.15 ERA in nine starts.
Musgrove threw two slow curveballs to Matt Olson, which checked in at 75.2 mph and 74.9 mphthe two slowest curveballs Statcast has ever tracked from Musgrove.
If Musgrove needs to be replaced, Martin Perez is a candidate to fill that slot.
Musgrove expressed concern about his injury but remains optimistic, stating, 'I don't know what the future looks like for me right now, but I know I'm going to give it every chance I have and I'll do whatever I have to do to get back in here at some point.'
