1. What are the Chennai Corporation's Monsoon Preparations?

The Greater Chennai Corporation has taken several precautionary measures to prepare for the northeast monsoon. One of the key steps is the purchase of 36 boats, which were distributed in zones 3 and 14, with one boat given to the Madhavaram zone and two to the Perungudi zone.

2. Why Did the Corporation Buy Boats?

The boats were purchased as a precautionary measure to handle potential flooding during the northeast monsoon. The Regional Meteorological Centre has cautioned that rainfall activity is likely to range from normal to slightly above normal levels during this period.

3. How Are the Zones Being Prepared?

The city Corporation has appointed 15 IAS officers to oversee monsoon preparedness in each zone. These officers are responsible for assessing preparedness, planning relief measures, and mitigating potential flood risks.

4. What Other Measures Are Being Taken?

In addition to boat distribution, the Corporation is undertaking various other measures. These include identifying vulnerable areas, mapping and analysis, preparedness of institutional arrangements, pre-positioning of human resources and materials, capacity building, mitigation measures, sanitization of other stakeholders, deployment and traffic plans, communication, relief arrangements, and medical preparedness.

5. How Can Citizens Assist in Flood Mitigation Efforts?

The Corporation is seeking dedicated Community Development Volunteers to assist with flood mitigation efforts. Volunteers can register at https://gccservices.chennaicorporation.gov.in/volunteer to help the civic body during floods.

6. What Other Initiatives Are Being Implemented?

The Corporation has also initiated other projects such as removing 1,311 advertisement boards and 317 advertisement banners from public spaces. Additionally, construction waste disposal has been regulated to specific areas in each zone to prevent clogging of drains.

Recently, the Corporation has taken steps to ensure that street works are halted until further notice to prevent disruptions during the monsoon season. The Mayor of Chennai also inspected drainage systems in various areas to ensure they are functioning properly.
