HD Kumaraswamy, a Union Minister in India, has been accused of extortion and criminal intimidation. The allegations stem from a complaint filed by Vijay Tata, a real estate entrepreneur who claims to have been the JD(S) social media vice president.
According to the complaint, Kumaraswamy and Ramesh Gowda allegedly demanded 50 crore from Vijay Tata for the Channapatna by-elections. Additionally, Ramesh Gowda reportedly requested 5 crore for temple and school construction projects.
The alleged extortion attempt began when Ramesh Gowda visited Vijay Tata's home on August 24. During the visit, Gowda informed Tata about Nikhil Kumaraswamy's candidacy in the Channapatna by-elections. Kumaraswamy then called Tata and demanded 50 crore for election expenses.
Vijay Tata responded by expressing his inability to pay such a large sum, citing his real estate business needs. This response allegedly led to Kumaraswamy threatening Tata, stating that it would be difficult for him to run his real estate business in Bengaluru if he didn't pay the demanded amount.
Yes, Ramesh Gowda allegedly made separate financial demands. He requested 5 crore for temple and school construction projects and sent multiple WhatsApp messages to Vijay Tata reiterating these demands.
Kumaraswamy has responded to the allegations by questioning their validity. He told reporters, 'Is this a topic to discuss? Should I answer all this? Should I respond to every other dog on the street?'
The Amruthahalli police have registered a case against Kumaraswamy and Ramesh Gowda under sections 308 (2) (extortion) and 351 (2) (criminal intimidation). An investigation has been initiated into the matter.
