Sanjeev Sanyal, a renowned economist and member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM), has been appointed as the Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) in Pune.
Sanjeev Sanyal is a well-known economist with over two decades of experience in international financial markets. He has served as the chief economist for South & South-East Asia and as a global strategist and managing director at Deutsche Bank.
Sanjeev Sanyal has been a member of the EAC-PM since 2022, holding the rank of secretary, Government of India. Prior to this, he was the principal economic adviser to the Union finance minister for five years until February 2022.
Bibek Debroy resigned as Chancellor due to a controversy over the removal of Vice-Chancellor Ajit Ranade. Ranade was terminated from his position after a fact-finding committee found that his appointment violated University Grants Commission (UGC) norms.
Sanjeev Sanyal's appointment is significant because he brings a wealth of experience in economics and academic administration. He is expected to lead GIPE to new heights of academic and social impact.
Sanjeev Sanyal has been appointed for a five-year term, effective from October 7, 2024. This term is expected to provide stability and continuity to the institute.
As Chancellor, Sanjeev Sanyal will have broad direction and governance responsibilities but will not be involved in the daily running of the institution. This role is akin to a 'non-executive chairman' in academic administration.
Sanjeev Sanyal confirmed his acceptance of the Chancellorship on his social media account, stating that he looks forward to working with faculty, staff, and students to build on GIPE's legacy.
The controversy surrounding Ajit Ranade's removal is ongoing. He has secured interim protection from the Bombay High Court, allowing him to continue as Vice-Chancellor until October 7, 2024.
Sanjeev Sanyal has assured that his new role as Chancellor will not impact his work as a full-time member of the EAC-PM. He will continue to serve in his capacity as a member of the council.
