Las Vegas police officers fatally shot a man armed with a knife outside a local business near Tropicana Avenue and Koval Lane on Friday morning.
The police were called by employees of a local business who requested help with a trespass order.
The man had gone behind the counter and threatened employees before leaving the business. When officers arrived, he was still outside in the parking lot, extremely agitated and holding a knife.
The man sped toward one of the officers, who fired their weapon. He then charged at another officer at full speed, causing that officer to backpedal and discharge their weapon as well.
The man continued to charge at officers, prompting another volley of shots. He started to run away but didn't get far before falling to the ground.
The officers regrouped and fired additional shots as the man continued to pose a threat. Additional officers arriving at the scene took the man into custody and provided medical intervention.
The man was later pronounced dead by staff at University Medical Center. As of this report, he had not been publicly identified.
Capt. Kurt McKenzie of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Officer of Internal Oversight and Constitutional Policing explained that the events unfolded extremely fast, making it difficult for officers to use less-lethal force.
This incident marks the 10th officer-involved shooting in LVMPD's jurisdiction this year, according to Capt. McKenzie.
