Beabadoobee on Her Unorthodox Guitar Style, Collaborating with Rick Rubin, and the Release of 'This Is How Tomorrow Moves'

Beabadoobee, the Filipino-English singer and songwriter known for her introspective indie rock sound, has been making waves in the music industry with her unique guitar style and recent collaborations. Born Beatrice Laus, beabadoobee gained widespread attention with her first song, 'Coffee,' written in 2017, which quickly amassed over 300,000 views on YouTube and caught the eye of Dirty Hit Records.

One of the standout aspects of beabadoobee's music is her unorthodox guitar playing. When working with session musicians, she often encounters confusion about her chord choices. 'Every time I play with a session musician, they’re like, “What are you doing? What chords are you playing?”' she revealed. This unconventional approach, however, has been a key factor in her creative process and has helped her connect with renowned producer Rick Rubin.

Collaboration with Rick Rubin

Beabadoobee's latest album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, was produced in collaboration with Rick Rubin. Rubin's influence extended beyond the technical aspects of production; he acted more like a therapist, helping beabadoobee to strip back her songs to their acoustic roots. 'He wanted me to play not my demos that we made in London, but how I wrote the songs in my bedroom, so acoustically,' she explained. This approach gave her the confidence and clarity she needed in her songwriting.

Rubin's method of focusing on the core of the song resonated deeply with beabadoobee. She described their first meeting as akin to a therapy session, where she felt a deep connection and understanding. 'He’s just an incredible guy, and he did this thing at the beginning of when we were making the record where he wanted me to play... how I wrote the songs in my bedroom,' she said, highlighting the spiritual and supportive nature of their collaboration.

Touring and Inspirations

Beabadoobee has also been on several high-profile tours, supporting artists such as Clairo, The 1975, Halsey, and most recently, Taylor Swift on her Eras tour. Her experience with Swift was particularly inspiring, as she admired Swift's live performances and incorporated elements of country hooks into her own songwriting. Despite the overwhelming nature of performing in front of large crowds, beabadoobee learned that mistakes on stage are insignificant in the grand scheme, a lesson that has helped her grow as a performer.

The release of This Is How Tomorrow Moves marks a significant milestone in beabadoobee's career, with the album already garnering attention and praise. The album features a mix of introspective and emotionally charged tracks, reflecting beabadoobee's growth as a songwriter and her ability to connect with her audience on a deeper level.

With her unique guitar style, heartfelt songwriting, and the guidance of Rick Rubin, beabadoobee continues to captivate her largely Gen-Z fanbase and expand her reach within the music industry. Her upcoming performances at All Points East and the Reading Festival are highly anticipated, as fans look forward to experiencing her new music live.
