Becky Hammon Speaks Out on Controversial WNBA Issues

Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon has been at the center of several contentious issues in the WNBA recently, drawing attention for her strong opinions and defensive stance on various matters.

Criticism of the Chicago Sky's Coaching Decision

Hammon recently criticized the Chicago Sky for their decision to fire coach Teresa Weatherspoon after less than a year. Hammon described the firing as 'baffling' and praised Weatherspoon for her performance with the team despite the Sky's rebuilding phase and significant roster changes. Hammon questioned the Sky's expectations from the remaining roster, highlighting the challenges Weatherspoon faced, including the trade of key players and numerous injuries.

Hammon's comments were echoed by fans and other figures in the league, who also expressed disbelief and frustration over the Sky's decision. Many argued that Weatherspoon had done an impressive job given the circumstances and that her firing was unjustified.

Dearica Hamby Lawsuit and Allegations

Hammon has also been involved in a legal dispute with former Aces player Dearica Hamby, who filed a federal lawsuit alleging gender discrimination and retaliation. Hamby claimed that she was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks because she was pregnant, and that Hammon had questioned her commitment to the team and accused her of signing her contract extension while knowing she was pregnant. Hammon has vehemently denied these allegations, stating that the trade was purely based on basketball and financial reasons.

Hammon emphasized that she has never had an HR complaint in her 25-year career in the WNBA and NBA and that the Aces provided 'over-the-top care' to Hamby during her tenure. The WNBA investigated the matter and resulted in the Aces forfeiting their 2025 first-round draft pick for giving Hamby impermissible benefits, and Hammon receiving a two-game suspension for violating workplace policy rules.
