Bengaluru to Celebrate 'Festival of Dogs' on October 17: A Celebration of Canine Companionship

In a unique initiative, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced plans to celebrate the 'Festival of Dogs' on October 17. This event aims to recognize the valuable contributions of dogs to the ecosystem while raising awareness about their positive roles in society. The festival, known as 'Kukur Tihar' in Nepal, is traditionally dedicated to honoring and worshipping dogs.

The BBMP's Animal Husbandry Department will introduce a range of initiatives under the campaign #BITEFREELOCALITY. These programs aim to cultivate 'coexistence champions' who will promote a compassionate environment for animals. The initiatives will not only address animal birth control and vaccinations but also stress the significance of understanding animal behavior and recognizing dogs as an integral part of nature.

1. Celebrating Canine Companionship

Dogs are often viewed with fear due to concerns over bites and attacks. However, the festival will spotlight their loyalty, obedience, protectiveness, and companionship. Suralkar Vikas Kishore, Special Commissioner for Welfare at BBMP, emphasized that while preventive measures to manage conflicts are advocated, it is crucial to celebrate and highlight the positive additions dogs bring to society.

The festival will bring together Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and animal caretakers across the city to share heartwarming stories and experiences with street dogs. This collaborative effort aims to change the narrative by celebrating the positive roles dogs play in society.

2. Initiatives Under #BITEFREELOCALITY

Under the umbrella of #BITEFREELOCALITY, BBMP plans to roll out multiple initiatives aimed at creating a humane environment for animals. These initiatives include improving the tracking and management of street dogs using technology such as microchipping stray dogs in areas like Mattikere and Malleswaram.

Additionally, BBMP will enlist pourakarmikas from four wards to assist in feeding community dogs. This pilot feeding exercise aims to improve the usage of leftover food by connecting restaurants with more caretakers in each area. This way, dogs are fed consistently every day, promoting their well-being and reducing reliance on external food sources.

3. Community Involvement and Volunteer Registration

If you are keen on being a part of all the upcoming initiatives as a volunteer from your ward, then scan the code, fill up the form, and submit it before October 15, 2024. You can also contact 1533 for any further questions. This community-driven approach ensures that everyone can contribute to creating a more compassionate environment for animals.

4. Ecological Balance and Harmonious Coexistence

Harmonious coexistence with animals is critical to maintaining the ecological balance around us. Beyond animal birth control and vaccinations, understanding animal behaviors and accepting them the way nature has created them is also important. BBMP's initiatives aim to promote this understanding and acceptance, fostering a deeper connection between humans and animals.

By celebrating the 'Festival of Dogs,' BBMP seeks to raise awareness about the importance of coexistence and the positive contributions dogs make to our society. This event not only honors our canine companions but also encourages residents to share their heartwarming stories and experiences with street dogs, further strengthening the bond between humans and animals.

In conclusion, the 'Festival of Dogs' on October 17 is a significant event that highlights the value and companionship of dogs in our lives. It is an opportunity for Bengaluru residents to come together and celebrate the positive roles dogs play in our ecosystem, promoting a more compassionate and harmonious coexistence.
