Delhi University Unveils Ambitious Initiatives: From Launching Satellites to Free Lunch Schemes

Delhi University (DU) has recently unveiled a series of ambitious initiatives aimed at enhancing its academic and environmental sustainability. These plans are part of the university's Institutional Development Plan (IDP) 2024, which outlines the broad goals and objectives the university wishes to achieve over a period of time.

1. Launching Its Own Satellite

One of the most significant initiatives is the plan to launch its own satellite. This ambitious project aims to play a major role in scientific research, telecommunications, GPS navigation, and remote education. However, if financial limitations arise, the DU may consider hiring services from organizations like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to make this plan a reality.

2. Promoting Environmental Sustainability

Delhi University is also focusing on environmental sustainability by planning to restrict fossil fuel vehicles on campus. The university aims to phase in electric vehicles, starting with areas like Chhatra Marg, to create a cleaner and greener environment for students and staff. This initiative is part of the university's zero-emission target.

3. Introducing a Free Lunch Scheme

Another major initiative the DU plans to introduce is a working lunch scheme for underprivileged students. This scheme will offer free meals in the university cafeteria in exchange for work. The canteens will follow strict food safety standards and could collaborate with self-help groups for food procurement to support local communities.

4. Establishing a University Haat

Delhi University is also looking at creating a 'University Haat', similar to those found in universities abroad. This commercial shopping area will showcase products developed by the university's student-led start-ups, providing a unique market opportunity for the university's massive population of nearly six lakh people.

5. Developing an Alumni Angel Network

The university's long-term vision includes developing an 'Alumni Angel Network' where successful alumni can provide mentorship and financial support to student-led start-ups. Additionally, the university plans to offer reverse internships where students hire industry professionals and establish a special Chair for multinational companies to promote research at the university in their interest.

The Institutional Development Plan was approved by the Academic Council members on Thursday, marking a significant step towards implementing these ambitious initiatives.
