FBR Considering Extension of Income Tax Return Filing Deadline

FBR Considering Extension of Income Tax Return Filing Deadline

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is likely to extend the deadline for the submission of income tax returns, following recent discussions and complaints from the business community. The current deadline is set for September 30, 2024.

Business Community's Appeal

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has been actively advocating for an extension. FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh has requested the FBR to extend the returns filing date by 30 days to October 30, citing technical difficulties and delays in the filing process.

Similar appeals have been made by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), with its President Iftikhar Ahmed Shaikh highlighting the problems faced by traders due to the FBRs online portal not functioning properly. Several traders have reported errors in the IRIS portal and the unavailability of the FBRs server.

Technical Issues and System Limitations

The technical issues with the FBRs online system have made the tax filing process cumbersome for many. The FPCCI has emphasized the need for simplifying the taxation system and income tax return forms to facilitate the process. The delayed issuance of return forms, which were supposed to be released by January 1, 2024, but were issued only on June 21, has further complicated the situation.

Despite initial statements from the FBR ruling out any extension beyond September 30, recent interactions between the business community and high-ranking officials, including the Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, have prompted a reconsideration. FBR sources indicate that the deadline might be extended by 15 days to October 15.

FBR's Response and Preparations

To ensure that no citizen misses the opportunity to file their tax returns, FBR offices will remain open on Sunday and Monday. Banks and tax offices will collect tax returns until 8pm on Monday. This move is aimed at easing the difficulties faced by taxpayers and maximizing the number of tax returns filed.
