Guwahati Grapples with Crime and Social Issues Amidst Ongoing Developments

Guwahati, the largest city in Assam, has been in the spotlight recently due to a series of disturbing and significant events. One of the most shocking incidents involved an 18-year-old girl who was arrested for allegedly bludgeoning her mother to death in the city.

The minor girl, who was taken into custody from Guwahati's Bormotoria locality, is accused of committing the heinous crime. This incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the growing concerns about juvenile delinquency and family violence in the region.

ULFA-I Bomb Planting Case

In another significant development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made its first arrest in the bomb-planting case orchestrated by the United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I). Girish Bora, alias Gautam, was apprehended in connection with the planting of Improvised Explosive Device (IED)-like objects in four locations across Guwahati. This arrest is part of a broader investigation into the ULFA-I's plans to trigger serial blasts on Independence Day.

Protests and Social Unrest

Guwahati has also witnessed protests and demonstrations on various issues. The United Opposition Forum staged a protest against the forced installation of smart meters in the city, demanding their complete withdrawal. Additionally, meter readers have rallied for job regularisation amidst the smart meter protests, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the government and the public over this issue.

The city is also dealing with the aftermath of a student's death at IIT Guwahati, which led to widespread protests and the eventual resignation of the dean. This incident has brought to the forefront the need for improved student welfare and mental health support in educational institutions.

Natural Disasters and Health Concerns

Assam, including Guwahati, has been affected by heavy rains and floods, resulting in significant damage and displacement. Over 41,000 people have been affected due to the heavy rains, and three deaths have been reported. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall in the eastern and north-east regions, with heavy rain expected to lash the northeast states over the next 4-5 days.

In the healthcare sector, the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has faced allegations of medical negligence after a newborns arm was fractured during delivery. The hospital has defended its medical care, attributing the complications to pre-existing conditions.
