Hickory, NC Braces for Hurricane Helene: Updates and Precautions

As Hurricane Helene approaches, the city of Hickory and Catawba County are taking proactive measures to ensure public safety and mitigate the impact of the storm.

State of Emergency Declared

Catawba County Board of Commissioners Chair Randy Isenhower declared a State of Emergency effective at 10:00 a.m. on September 26, in anticipation of the severe weather conditions brought by Hurricane Helene. This declaration enables Catawba County Emergency Services to implement coordinated response and recovery efforts and collaborate with emergency response partners.

Government Office and Park Closures

Due to the anticipated impacts of Hurricane Helene, Catawba County government offices will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 27, instead of their usual time. Additionally, all Catawba County Parks, including Bakers Mountain Park, Mountain Creek Park, Riverbend Park, and St. Stephens Park, have been closed until further notice.

Hickory City Preparations

The City of Hickory has also declared an official state of emergency, effective at 10 a.m. on September 26. This declaration activates the Hickory Emergency Operations Plan and authorizes the city to apply for financial assistance if needed through state or federal agencies. Henry Fork River Park will close at 3:30 p.m. on September 26 due to potential flooding.

Public Safety Advisories

Residents are advised to be cautious of downed power lines, fallen trees, and debris. Travel is discouraged unless necessary, and drivers should be aware of possible roadway hazards, including flooded areas and non-functioning traffic signals. Barricades may be placed in areas affected by flooding and storm damage, and residents are warned not to proceed past these barricades. Preparation for possible power outages is also recommended, including charging phones and battery packs, and having essential items ready.
