Kaci Sloan: Arizona State University Student Charged in Random Classmate Stabbing

In a shocking and disturbing incident, Kaci Lenise-Charlie Sloan, a 19-year-old student at Arizona State University (ASU), has been charged with multiple counts related to the stabbing of her classmate, Mara Daffron. The attack occurred on September 19, 2024, in a classroom at ASU's West Valley campus in Glendale, Arizona.

According to reports, Sloan allegedly stabbed Daffron multiple times without any provocation or words spoken. The incident was witnessed by approximately 13 people, including a professor and several students, who recounted the events to police. One of the witnesses, Matthew McCormick, a Navy veteran and student, intervened and potentially saved Daffron's life by grabbing Sloan's wrists and disarming her.

Sloan has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and disorderly conduct with a weapon. She is currently being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond. In an interview with detectives, Sloan admitted to planning the attack the night before and choosing Daffron as the target because she was an 'easier target' than another person she considered, who was a veteran.

Daffron, who is also 19, was treated at the scene by EMTs and then taken to a hospital for surgery. Her spleen was ruptured during the attack, and she underwent surgery. She is currently recovering at home and is in stable condition.

Sloan's motivations for the attack were described as stemming from self-worth issues. A handwritten note found in her backpack referenced an act she was 'about to commit,' but it did not specify what she was referring to. The attack has left the ASU community deeply saddened and has raised concerns about campus safety.

The incident has also highlighted the bravery of Matthew McCormick, who intervened in the attack. McCormick described feeling compelled to act immediately and has been hailed as a hero for his actions. His intervention likely prevented further harm and potentially saved Daffron's life.

The case is ongoing, with Sloan's preliminary hearing scheduled for Monday in Maricopa County. The community is coming together to support Daffron and her family through a GoFundMe campaign, which aims to cover any expenses related to her recovery.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health support and campus safety measures. It also underscores the bravery and quick thinking of students who can intervene in such situations to prevent further harm.
