Maha Saptami 2024: Celebrating the Seventh Day of Durga Puja

Maha Saptami, observed on October 10, 2024, marks the seventh day of the Durga Puja festival, one of the most significant Hindu celebrations. This day honors the goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. The festival is celebrated with great fervor in states like West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Odisha, and Sikkim.

The rituals of Maha Saptami involve several traditional practices. One of the most significant rituals is the Nabapatrika Snan, where nine plants symbolizing the goddess are bathed and adorned, representing her awakening. These nine plantsturmeric, bel, ashoke, jayanti, pomegranate, banana, paddy, colocasia, and arumrepresent the eight goddesses created by Durga to fight against Mahishasura and herself.

Another ritual is the Navapatrika ritual, where these nine plants are taken to the river Ganges for a bath before sunrise. If the ghat is too far or impractical, Ganga Jal is used. This ritual symbolizes the preparation of the goddess for her battle against evil.

Devotees also perform Saraswati Puja on Maha Saptami. Books and musical instruments are kept, and the goddess is prayed to for success in the quest for knowledge. This adds a cultural and educational dimension to the festivities.

The festival is also associated with a legend surrounding Lord Rama. According to this legend, Lord Rama prayed to Goddess Durga before commencing his battle with the demon king Ravana, who had abducted his wife Sita. This special 'puja' had to be done with 100 blue lotus flowers called 'neelkamal' but Lord Rama could only find 99 such flowers. In order to complete the 'puja' and out of his intense devotion to Goddess Durga, Lord Rama plucked out his own eye, which was blue, and offered it to the Goddess in place of the one missing blue lotus. This pleased the Goddess a lot resulting in her showering him with all her blessings, which helped him win the war against Ravana.

The Maha Puja of the Durga Puja festivities begins on the day of Maha Saptami because this is the day that the legendary battle between Goddess Durga and the demon king Mahishasura began. This is a festival that celebrates the victory of the Goddess over the demon. The battle ended on Vijayadashami day, which is the 10th and last day of the Durga Puja festival. It is symbolic of the victory of good over evil, not just in the world, but also in the hearts and minds of human beings all over the world.

The festive atmosphere is filled with decorated pandals with the Goddess' murti, loud music, and occasional dancing by enthusiasts. Crowds of devotees throng to the pandals. Celebrations are not complete without street food and mithais (sweet-meats) which are in great demand. Feasting at home and outside is done. New clothes, electronic gadgets, cars, and more are high on peoples purchase lists.

In summary, Maha Saptami is a significant day in the Durga Puja celebrations, filled with rich traditions, cultural events, and spiritual significance. It marks the beginning of the main festival and sets the stage for the final victory of good over evil on Vijayadashami.
