Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has been honored as the 2024 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. This prestigious award marks Collier's first time receiving the defensive honor, following a stellar season where she demonstrated exceptional defensive skills.

Collier secured the award with 36 votes from a 67-member national media panel, edging out A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces, who received 26 votes. During the season, Collier averaged 1.91 steals per game, ranking second in the league, and also posted impressive figures with 7.5 defensive rebounds per game and 1.41 blocks per game, both career highs.

Collier's defensive prowess was instrumental in the Lynx achieving the second-best defensive rating in the league at 94.8 and allowing the fewest points per game at 75.6. Her overall performance also included averaging 20.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game, making her a key contributor to the team's success.

Cheryl Reeve's Coaching Excellence

In addition to Collier's accolade, Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve was named the 2024 WNBA Coach of the Year. Reeve received an overwhelming 62 votes out of 67, surpassing her previous records and setting a new milestone. This is her fourth Coach of the Year award, having previously won in 2011, 2016, and 2020.

Under Reeve's leadership, the Lynx had a remarkable season, finishing with a 30-10 record and securing the second-best overall standing in the league. Her ability to integrate new players and maintain a high level of team performance was highlighted as a key factor in her award.

Reeve's coaching and Collier's defensive excellence have been pivotal in the Lynx's strong performance this season, including winning the Commissioner's Cup and finishing with the league's lowest field goal percentage allowed at 41.0%.

Collier's All-Round Performance

Collier, a four-time All-Star selection, also won her second Olympic gold medal this year. Her versatility on the court, combining strong defensive skills with significant offensive contributions, has made her a standout player in the league.
