Netflix Plan Updates: What You Need to Know

Netflix has recently made significant changes to its subscription plans, impacting both new and existing subscribers. One of the key changes is the phasing out of the basic ad-free plan, a move that has been gradual across different regions.

Phasing Out of Basic Ad-Free Plan

The basic ad-free plan, which was once the cheapest option, is no longer available for new subscribers in the U.S. and other countries like the U.K. and Canada. Existing subscribers on this plan have been notified to choose a new plan to continue their service, with options including the Standard with ads, Standard, and Premium plans.

New Plan Options

Netflix now offers several plans to cater to different user preferences. The Standard with ads plan, priced at $6.99 per month, allows users to watch in Full HD on two supported devices simultaneously and includes downloads on two devices. This plan is particularly attractive for those on a budget and is included at no extra cost with certain T-Mobile plans.

The Standard plan, costing $15.49 per month, offers ad-free viewing in Full HD on two devices and allows downloads on two devices. Additionally, users can add an extra member who does not live with them for $7.99 per month.

The Premium plan, priced at $22.99 per month, provides Ultra HD (4K) quality on up to four devices and allows downloads on six devices. This plan also offers the option to add up to two extra members who do not live with the primary account holder for $7.99 each per month.

User Reaction and Impact

The changes have met with mixed reactions from subscribers. Some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the removal of the basic ad-free plan and the introduction of ads, leading to cancellations and a shift towards other streaming services. Others have found the ad-supported plan to be a viable and cost-effective option.

Despite the backlash, Netflix has seen a significant increase in ad-supported subscriptions, with a 34% increase in the quarter following the introduction of the Standard with ads plan. The company reported a record 277.65 million subscribers across all tiers in the second quarter of 2024.
