Newcastle vs AFC Wimbledon Carabao Cup Match Postponed Due to Flooding and Sinkhole

The highly anticipated Carabao Cup third-round match between Newcastle United and AFC Wimbledon has been postponed due to extensive flooding and significant damage to the Cherry Red Records Stadium. The flooding, caused by the River Wandle breaking its banks on Sunday night, resulted in what appeared to be a sinkhole near the corner of the pitch and flooded walkways around the ground.

Flooding and Damage

Heavy rain and flash flooding across the UK over the weekend led to the Met Office issuing an amber warning for rain. The Cherry Red Records Stadium was particularly hard hit, with pictures showing the extent of the flooding and the apparent sinkhole on the pitch.

Match Postponement and Rescheduling Challenges

Both clubs announced the postponement on social media on Monday morning. AFC Wimbledon stated, 'We regret to inform supporters that due to extensive overnight flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, including at our Cherry Red Records Stadium, Tuesday nights Carabao Cup third-round fixture against Newcastle United has been postponed.' The stadium is currently closed until further notice.

Finding a new date for the match may prove challenging, as AFC Wimbledon has a busy schedule in October with four midweek matches in both League Two and the Bristol Street Motors Trophy. Newcastle, while having fewer commitments in October, also face scheduling constraints due to upcoming Premier League games and an international break.

Support from Newcastle United

In a gesture of solidarity, Newcastle United has pledged 15,000 to help AFC Wimbledon recover from the damage caused by the flooding.

Upcoming Carabao Cup Schedule

The draw for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup is set to take place after the conclusion of the televised fixture between Liverpool and West Ham at Anfield on Wednesday night. The fourth-round matches are scheduled to be played during the week beginning October 28.
