Northumberland Libraries Unveil Packed Programme of Events for Autumn

As the autumn season sets in, Northumberland Libraries are gearing up to offer a diverse and engaging array of events, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Cultural Events and Performances

This autumn, Northumberland Libraries have organized a fantastic programme of cultural events and performances across the county. According to Councillor Jeff Watson, Cabinet Member for Culture, Heritage and Libraries, "The Libraries team has been very busy organising a fantastic programme of events which genuinely has something for everyone".

One of the highlights includes the Harrogate Old Peculier Crime Festival Big Read, which is returning to Northumberland. Author Luca Veste, the festival's Reader in Residence, will visit Hexham Library on September 25 for a lunchtime book group discussion about Ajay Chowdhury’s ‘The Detective’, an edge-of-your-seat mystery and Sunday Times crime book of the year.

Literary and Theatrical Performances

Literary enthusiasts will be delighted by the various author sessions and drama performances. For instance, ‘The Border Readers’, a regional group of experienced professional actors, will present their latest offering ‘Land Lines’ at several libraries, including Bellingham Library on October 16, Wooler Library on October 24, Allendale Library on November 7, and Morpeth Library on November 14. This series features readings of short form fiction on themes ranging from ghosts to crime.

Additionally, the Hexham-based theatre company ‘Theatres Sans Frontières’ will perform ‘Many Happy Returns’, a play commissioned by Northumberland Libraries to celebrate its centenary. Performances will be held at Bellingham Library (Town Hall) on November 5, Rothbury Jubilee Hall on November 17, Allendale Village Hall on November 21, and Haltwhistle Library (Hub) on November 22.

Music and Community Events

Music lovers are also in for a treat with performances by ‘Fool’s Gold’, an acoustic musical duo. They will perform at Cramlington and Hexham Libraries on November 7 and 11 with a Remembrance Day event ‘Beat the Drum’, and at Morpeth and Haltwhistle Libraries on December 4 and 17 with their popular Christmas Show.

Digital Offers and Community Activities

Apart from live events, Northumberland Libraries are also enhancing their digital offerings. The National Theatre Collection 3, featuring plays from Greek tragedy to modern works, will be available free on library public computers. Additionally, a free video on demand service, ‘BFI Replay’, with thousands of digitised videos and television programmes, will be accessible.

Local libraries continue to host regular community activities, such as reading groups, board game groups, and Knit and Natter sessions, ensuring there is always something to engage in.

Special Events for All Ages

For families, the Northumberland Public Library is hosting a Fall Family Fun Fest on October 24, featuring games and crafts for all ages starting at 3 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

In summary, Northumberland Libraries' autumn programme is a testament to the library service's commitment to keeping residents entertained, active, and engaged. As Councillor Jeff Watson noted, these events provide a safe and warm environment for people to meet friends and neighbours, making them an integral part of community life.
