NPR Launches 'Stress Less' Series to Help Manage Life's Challenges

In an effort to help individuals cope with the stresses of everyday life, NPR has introduced its 'Stress Less' series. This initiative, launched on September 30, is designed to provide science-backed strategies and tips to improve mental well-being and reduce anxiety.

The Resilience Challenge

At the heart of the 'Stress Less' series is the 'Resilience Challenge,' an online stress-reduction course developed by Northwestern University. This five-week program, led by Judith Moskowitz, vice chair for scientific and faculty development at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, focuses on eight positive-emotion skills. These skills include self-compassion, noticing positive events, and savoring positive experiences, such as enjoying a good cup of coffee or appreciating a sunset.

Moskowitz's research has shown that these skills can be particularly effective in increasing positive emotions, even in challenging circumstances. Her team has tested these skills in randomized controlled trials with various groups, including people with serious illnesses, caregivers for those with dementia, individuals with depression, high school students, and violence interrupters.

Weekly Newsletters and Expert Insights

As part of the 'Stress Less' series, NPR will offer five weekly newsletters that delve into the science of stress and provide practical tips for practicing resilience skills. These newsletters will feature stories of individuals who have successfully managed various types of stress, including relationship and work stress, as well as concerns about climate change and political polarization.

NPR's food and health correspondent, Allison Aubrey, is leading the 'Stress Less' series and highlights the evidence-based nature of Moskowitz's research. 'Her studies show that the course helps people practice skills that can really help,' Aubrey noted, emphasizing the simplicity and effectiveness of these strategies.

Enrollment and Accessibility

Anyone 18 years or older can enroll in the online 'Resilience Challenge' course, regardless of whether they are NPR listeners. This enrollment also includes participation in a research study led by Moskowitz's team, providing an opportunity for individuals to not only learn new skills but also contribute to ongoing research in resilience.

By combining expert insights, real-life stories, and accessible strategies, NPR's 'Stress Less' series aims to empower individuals to reclaim their calm and better manage the stresses of modern life.
