A recent incident on Brisbane's northside has been fully captured on CCTV, showing the moments before, during, and after a shooting. The footage includes the shots themselves and has been crucial in the investigation. A man was seriously hurt in the incident, and two people are currently in custody after allegedly fleeing the scene.
Brisbane City Council's extensive CCTV network has proven invaluable in fighting crime. With 3,500 cameras monitored 24/7, the system has captured 1,595 offences in the last 12 months. These incidents include fights, scuffles, substance exchanges, disorderly conduct, alcohol offences, assault, and theft. The council has installed an additional 240 cameras in crime hotspots over the past year to combat youth crime.
The CCTV system allows operators to take direct control of the cameras to zoom in and capture relevant footage. In some cases, the cameras are equipped with speakers, enabling operators to communicate with individuals involved in incidents. This capability has significantly aided law enforcement in identifying and addressing crimes as they occur.
While the CCTV network is seen as a powerful tool in deterring crime, there are also considerations regarding privacy. Queensland Police Service acknowledges that while cameras are an invaluable resource, there must be a balance between community safety and individual privacy. The presence of CCTV cameras makes people less likely to commit offences, knowing they are being monitored.
