Retired General Stanley McChrystal Endorses Kamala Harris for President

In a significant move, retired Army General Stanley McChrystal, once dubbed 'the finest warrior' in the U.S. military, has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. McChrystal, who oversaw the Afghanistan war during the Obama administration, expressed his support in a recent New York Times op-ed.

McChrystal's endorsement is rooted in his belief in Harris's character, rather than specific policy positions. He stated, 'I have cast my vote for character, and that vote is for Vice President Kamala Harris.' Despite feeling uneasy with several policy proposals from both Democrats and Republicans, McChrystal emphasized that character is the definitive standard for leadership in the highest office.

The retired general highlighted Harris's strength, temperament, and values as key reasons for his endorsement. He noted, 'Ms. Harris has the strength, the temperament and, importantly, the values to serve as commander in chief. When she sits down with world leaders like President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, representing the United States on the global stage, I have no doubt that she is working in our national interest, not her own.'

A Focus on Character Over Policy

McChrystal's decision was not swayed by political rhetoric or cultural divisions. Instead, he reflected on what he has witnessed and learned, considering his responsibilities to his three granddaughters. He concluded that the choice of president should be about selecting the best leader, regardless of political slogans or cultural tribalism.

Historical examples of presidential character were also cited by McChrystal. He mentioned instances such as Jimmy Carter's acceptance of accountability for the unsuccessful 1980 Iran hostage rescue and John F. Kennedy's management of the Cuban Missile Crisis, emphasizing that character is revealed through actions during times of crisis.

Broader Support from Military Leaders

McChrystal's endorsement is part of a broader trend of support for Harris from retired military leaders. A group called National Security Leaders for America, which includes former Defense Secretaries and retired generals like Rear Admiral Michael E. Smith and General Michael V. Hayden, has also endorsed Harris. They praised her handling of significant national security issues and her unwavering support for military personnel and their families.

Additionally, over 700 current and former national security leaders have rallied behind Harris, asserting that she possesses the necessary temperament and values to serve as commander-in-chief. This collective endorsement underscores the importance of character and leadership in the upcoming presidential election.

Past Conflicts and Current Significance

McChrystal's relationship with political figures has been complex. In 2019, he criticized then-President Donald Trump as 'immoral' and 'not telling the truth,' which led to a public rebuke from Trump. Despite past conflicts, McChrystal's current endorsement of Harris highlights his commitment to character and leadership over political affiliations.

The endorsement also follows a letter from 100 former officials in Republican administrations, including top military and defense leaders, who backed Harris and criticized Trump as 'unfit to serve again as President.' This diverse support base underscores the significant implications of McChrystal's endorsement in the ongoing presidential campaign.
