Series of Earthquakes Hit Southern California, Prompting Public Awareness and Safety Precautions

A trio of earthquakes struck Southern California on Saturday, causing mild to noticeable shaking in various regions. The earthquakes, which included a 3.2-magnitude quake off the coast of Malibu and another in the Fontana area, were part of a series of seismic events that have been recorded in the region over the past week.

The earthquakes were detected by the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS), which includes data from the USGS, University of California, Berkeley, California Institute of Technology, and the University of Nevada, Reno. These systems provide real-time updates and maps to help track and understand earthquake activity.

Public Safety and Warning Systems

In response to the frequent seismic activity, California has implemented the Earthquake Warning California system, the country's first publicly available, statewide earthquake warning system. This system uses ground motion sensors to detect earthquakes before the shaking is felt by humans, providing crucial seconds for residents to take cover and follow the 'Drop, Cover and Hold On' protocol.

Residents and visitors can receive earthquake warnings through the MyShake App, available for both iPhone and Android users, as well as through Android Earthquake Alerts and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs). These alerts are triggered for earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.5 or higher and Modified Mercalli Intensity III (weak) shaking or higher.

Preparation and Safety Tips

Given the sudden and unpredictable nature of earthquakes, preparation is key. The City of Los Angeles and other emergency management departments provide extensive resources, including guides from FEMA and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), to help individuals, families, and businesses prepare for and respond to earthquakes. These resources include earthquake safety checklists, home hazard hunts, and tips for protecting property and ensuring the safety of all family members, including pets and the elderly.

For those living or traveling in earthquake-prone areas, it is essential to stay informed and take proactive steps. The public is encouraged to visit the 'My Hazards' site to determine if their area is prone to earthquakes and to download the necessary apps to receive timely warnings.
