Sunil Chhetri Makes ISL History as Bengaluru FC Tops the Table

In a historic match, Sunil Chhetri has become the leading goal-scorer in the Indian Super League (ISL) after scoring his 64th goal in the league. This milestone was achieved during Bengaluru FC's convincing 3-0 victory over Mohun Bagan at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.

Chhetri, who was tied with Bartholomew Ogbeche on 63 goals, broke the record with a penalty goal in the 51st minute of the match. This goal not only secured his place as the top scorer but also contributed to Bengaluru FC's third win of the season, keeping them at the top of the ISL points table.

Match Highlights

The match saw Bengaluru FC dominate from the start. Edgar Mendez opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes, followed by Suresh Singh doubling the advantage in the 20th minute. Chhetri played a crucial role in the second goal, assisting Suresh with a well-weighted cross.

Chhetri's decisive penalty in the 51st minute sealed the win for Bengaluru FC. Despite being 40 years old, Chhetri continues to show glimpses of his best form, leading his team to a perfect start in the season with three wins in as many matches.

Current Standings

With this victory, Bengaluru FC maintains their top position in the ISL points table. Mohun Bagan, on the other hand, suffered their first defeat of the season and are currently placed sixth. Mohun Bagan have won one match, drawn one, and lost one in their three matches so far.

Chhetri, known for his humility, downplayed his personal milestone and emphasized the team's victory. 'I am really happy to win the game. Whatever goals I have scored is because of the team I have played with. It's been a long journey with Bengaluru FC in the ISL. But I am just happy that we won the game. When the season ends, we will see how many goals I get, but for now, it's (all about) three points,' he said.
