Tamil News: Heavy Rains Batter Chennai and North Tamil Nadu

Heavy Overnight Rains Cause Widespread Disruption in Chennai

Chennai and its surrounding areas experienced severe rainfall on Wednesday night, leading to significant waterlogging, power outages, and traffic congestion across the city. The heavy downpour, which started after 6 PM, continued late into the night, causing considerable disruption to daily life.

According to reports from the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai's western parts, including Avadi and Ambattur, were among the areas that received very heavy rainfall. Avadi recorded 13 cm of rainfall, while Ambattur received 12 cm till 6 AM on Thursday.

Extensive Waterlogging and Power Outages

The heavy rainfall resulted in waterlogging in various areas of the city, including Nungambakkam, Velachery, Anna Nagar, and G.P. Road. Social media platforms were filled with photos and videos showing submerged subways and railway under-bridges, particularly in areas like Sekkadu.

Power outages were also reported in several parts of the city due to the heavy rain. The rainfall data from Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam showed 7.42 cm and 7.12 cm of rainfall, respectively, from 8:30 AM on Wednesday to 5:30 AM on Thursday.

Impact on Neighboring Districts

The rainfall was not limited to Chennai; neighboring districts such as Tiruvallur, Vellore, and Cuddalore, as well as Puducherry, also experienced significant downpours. Places like Thiruvalangadu in Tiruvallur district recorded 11 cm of rainfall, while Tiruninravur, Villivakkam, and Red Hills received around 8-9 cm of rainfall.

Forecast for Further Rains

The regional meteorological centre has forecasted light to moderate rains in north Tamil Nadu until the weekend. This prediction is based on the current weather system, which includes a low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas.

Inflow into Water Reservoirs

The heavy rains have also led to a considerable inflow into the city's drinking water sources. The Red Hills and Chembarambakkam reservoirs received an inflow of 700 cubic feet per second and 350 cusecs, respectively, providing some relief in terms of water supply.

Weather Conditions in Other Regions

In addition to Tamil Nadu, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain in several districts of Telangana. Under the influence of the current weather system, Telangana is likely to experience light to moderate rains over many places today and tomorrow, with heavy rainfall expected in one or two places in the northern and northeast districts.

Conclusion

The heavy rains in Chennai and north Tamil Nadu have highlighted the need for better infrastructure to handle such weather conditions. As the region prepares for further rains, residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
