The Evolution and Future of the Toyota GR Supra: Performance, Style, and Innovation

The Toyota GR Supra has been a cornerstone of the automotive world since its revival in 2019. This sports car, known for its powerful performance and striking style, continues to captivate enthusiasts with its latest updates and future prospects.

The 2024 GR Supra Lineup

For the 2024 model year, the GR Supra offers a range of exciting options. The GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition is a tribute to the iconic MkIV Supra, featuring a 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine that produces 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. This edition comes with a rich hazelnut interior color option and is available with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

The standard GR Supra models include the 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine, which outputs 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This model is also available with an eight-speed automatic transmission and boasts a curb weight about 200 pounds less than the 3.0-liter models.

All 2024 GR Supra models, regardless of engine choice, benefit from suspension tuning and shock absorbers set for a balance between body roll and ride comfort. The mechanical components in the electric power steering and the systems operating parameters are also tuned for agile handling. Additionally, all 3.0-liter models come with an active rear sport differential standard.

Performance and Handling

The GR Supra is renowned for its exceptional performance. The 3.0-liter models can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds with the eight-speed automatic transmission and 4.2 seconds with the six-speed manual transmission. In contrast, the 2.0-liter model achieves this feat in 5.0 seconds.

Despite its powerful performance, the GR Supra also offers reasonable fuel economy. The 3.0-liter models achieve a manufacturer-estimated 26 mpg combined with the automatic transmission and 21 mpg combined with the manual transmission. The 2.0-liter model achieves a manufacturer-estimated 27 mpg combined.

Interior and Features

The interior of the GR Supra is functional and well-assembled, offering a range of premium features. The 45th Anniversary Edition comes with heated, black leather-trimmed sport seats, a black leather-wrapped tilt/telescopic steering wheel, an 8.8-inch touchscreen, and a 12-speaker JBL HiFi Surround system.

Additionally, the 45th Anniversary Edition features Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (on AT models), Cruise Control (on MT models), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and Parking Sensors with Emergency Braking Function standard.

Future Prospects

Rumors suggest that production of the current GR Supra will end in 2026, marking the end of an era for this iconic sports car. The final model year is expected to feature a special GRMN variant with a twin-turbocharged BMW-sourced 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine producing 542 horsepower.

The next-generation Toyota Supra is speculated to be all-electric and could arrive in showrooms as early as 2026. This new model is expected to retain the rear-wheel drive layout and could be based on an updated version of Toyotas e-TNGA architecture.

Despite these future changes, the current GR Supra remains a compelling choice for sports car enthusiasts. Its powerful engine, agile handling, and premium features make it a standout in its class.
