Veteran Malayalam Actor T.P. Madhavan Passes Away at 88

Renowned Malayalam actor T.P. Madhavan, who was the first General Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88. The veteran actor breathed his last at a private hospital in Kollam, Kerala.

Madhavan was a prominent figure in the Malayalam film industry during the '80s and '90s, known for his versatility and extensive career spanning over six decades. He began his acting career at the age of 40, debuting in the 1975 film Raagam . Initially, he played villainous roles but later transitioned to comedy and character roles, earning him a devoted fan base.

Before entering the film industry, Madhavan had a diverse career. He was selected for the Indian Army but had to withdraw due to a hand injury. He then worked in an English newspaper in Bombay and later ran advertising agencies in Mumbai and Kolkata. His postgraduate degree in sociology from Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University further highlighted his academic achievements.

Madhavan's contributions to the film industry were not limited to his acting career. He served as the first General Secretary of AMMA, a position that reflects his dedication to the welfare of Malayalam movie artists. He was also honored with the Ramu Karyat Award and the Prem Nazir Award for his contributions to cinema.

The actor's personal life included a marriage that ended in divorce. He is survived by his daughter Devika and son Raja Krishna Menon, who is a noted film director in Bollywood. Raja Krishna Menon has directed films like Chef , Airlift , and Pippa .

In his later years, Madhavan faced health issues, including a stroke and amnesia, which eventually led to his retirement from acting. Despite these challenges, he remained a beloved figure in the Malayalam film industry until his passing.

The last rites of T.P. Madhavan will be held on Thursday at Santhi Kavadam. His legacy in the Malayalam film industry will be remembered through his numerous films, including Kalikkalam , Nadodikkattu , Vietnam Colony , Sandesham , and many more.
