Zomato Co-Founder and Chief People Officer Akriti Chopra Resigns After 13-Year Tenure

Akriti Chopra, a co-founder and the Chief People Officer of Zomato, has resigned from her position with immediate effect. The resignation was announced on September 27, 2024, in a filing to the stock exchange.

Chopra, who joined Zomato in 2011 as a senior manager in finance and operations, has had a storied career with the company. She rose through the ranks, serving as the Chief Financial Officer until 2020, when Akshant Goyal took over the role. Most recently, she was the Chief People Officer, a position she held after transitioning from her CFO role in 2020.

Career Highlights and Contributions

During her 13-year tenure, Chopra played a crucial role in establishing Zomatos finance functions, building its governance, risk, and compliance teams, and facilitating several funding rounds. She was also instrumental in expanding the companys international presence. Chopra was promoted to co-founder in 2021, just before Zomatos initial public offering.

In her resignation email to Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal, Chopra expressed her gratitude for the enriching journey and offered her continued support. 'Deepi, as discussed, formally sending in my resignation effective today, September 27, 2024. It's been an incredibly enriching journey over the past 13 years. Thank you for everything. I'm always a call away. Wishing you and Eternal, the very best,' she wrote.

Recent Leadership Changes at Zomato

Chopras departure is part of a series of significant leadership changes at Zomato. She is the fifth co-founder to exit the company in about two years, following Gunjan Patidar, Mohit Gupta, Gaurav Gupta, and Pankaj Chaddah. Other key departures include Rahul Ganjoo, the former head of food delivery, and Siddharth Jhawar, the head of Intercity Legends service.

Chopra is also notable for being the wife of Albinder Dhindsa, the founder of Blinkit, which Zomato acquired in 2022. However, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal clarified that Chopra had no involvement in any discussions or decisions related to the acquisition.

Her resignation marks a significant shift in Zomatos leadership structure, and it remains to be seen how the company will adapt to these changes in the competitive food delivery landscape.
